Foreign Ministry's statement on the court's ruling on the 13 January case
On 27 March, the Vilnius Regional Court issued a ruling on the 13 January case. 67 individuals were found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity for their involvement in the Soviet aggression on 13 January 1991 in Vilnius.
“After 28 years, the people of Lithuania finally get an evaluation of these tragic January events. The ruling on the 13 January case is an important step in restoring justice and historical objectivity,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius.
After Lithuania restored its independence, the Soviet Union used its military force in an attempt to re-incorporate the country in January 1991. As a result of the military attempt to seize the Press House building, the TV tower, the premises of the Lithuanian National Radio and Television, and to establish a curfew, 14 civilians were killed and more than 800 were injured.
The Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Lithuania handed over the 13 January case to the Vilnius Regional Court in 2015. 67 former Soviet officials were facing charges, 65 of whom were being tried in absentia. They have been subjected to European Arrest Warrants, an international search has been announced.
