16 January – 8 March 2009/ “4 A. Code Share: 4 continents, 10 biennales, 20 artists”

Share code defines exchange of data and services in the sphere of tourism between airline companies, which share passenger lists under mutual agreement and, when reasonable from the financial point of view, connect flights (one company books tickets for passengers for a flight of the other company if both companies’ flights on the same route with half-empty planes are unprofitable). It often happens so that a traveller, having bought a ticket from one of the airline companies, is surprised finding the plane and service staff of the totally different airline company bearing the other company’s logo. Similarly, food directly associated with the peculiarities of national culture can turn into a pleasing surprise for a traveller who is keen on adventure. But such surprises may turn people down because they may have expected to feel the “taste of home” and before the plane touches ground to relax surrounded by familiar sounds and tastes. The Code Share exhibition reflects these strategies of the tourism business and together with African, American, Asian, Australian and European biennales of contemporary art brings the most notable works of art to Vilnius. The Contemporary Art Centre initiated co-operation with ten international biennales. Two artists selected from each biennale in co-operation with their curators and directors were came to Vilnius to create large works for the Code Share exhibition. This is how Vilnius will become global terminal for creating and distributing art. This is the first time when Code Share introduces the audience of the Contemporary Art Centre to African artists and when African artists travel to Vilnius to create. The project will involve the following biennales: From Africa - Sharjah Biennale (United Arab Emirates) and Dak’Art (Senegal), from Australia - Adelaide Biennale of Australian Art (Australia) and Sidney Biennale (Australia), from North America - Whitney Biennale of American Art (USA) and SITE Santa Fe (USA), from Asia - Singapore Biennale (Singapore) and Taipei Biennale (Taiwan), from Europe – Istanbul Biennale (Turkey) and Liverpool Biennale (England).
