19-20 March 2009/ Conference “European Capitals of Culture: Reflections of Vilnius”
Each year more and more cities apply to become European capital of culture. The city conferred this title gains the status of star in Europe, which provides the opportunity to reveal exclusive local history and contemporary culture, makes the city visible to the broad audience of foreign guests and develops respect and pride of citizens of the European Capital of Culture in their city.
Conferring of the title of the European Capital of Culture opens a difficult path of implementing the capital of culture programme involving many challenges and risks. The conference “European Capitals of Culture: Reflections of Vilnius” is intended for those willing to explore and discover the process of European Capital of Culture year, the meaning of the programme and its impact on the life of the city.
Participants of the conference include implementers of former European capitals of culture programmes and representatives of future, former or applying capitals of culture. The discussion of the event’s participants is a way to discover the experiences of former European capitals of culture and to find answers to the questions which cities presented with this title have faced.
Planned topics: 1) The title of European Capital of Culture and development of the city’s social, economic and cultural panorama. Measures and methods to evaluate this development; 2) Cases of social innovation. News ways for urban development; 3)Experience of European capitals of culture. Expression of creativity, achievements and lessons.
