19-26 February 2009/ Icy Baroque
This is the brightest currently existing heritage of baroque architecture in Vilnius concentrated in one of the city's models designed from ice structures. Visitors to this project will have the opportunity to see the most outstanding baroque buildings in Vilnius in one place and at the same time to use it as a map and guide to discover their authentic look-alikes on the streets of the city. It is not by chance that ice was chosen as the construction material for this project as it has the unique ability to disperse rays of light falling onto it and thus convey attractively and highlight the splendour of baroque architecture.
Multifaceted artistic and educational activities are planned for the entire time of displaying the ice town, i.e. seven days.
At daylight visitors will be invited to look around the town and discover the history of each ice object, explore baroque culture in Vilnius through thematic expositions or listen to interactive theatricalised stories and legends told by guides.
At the sound of baroque music performed live by baroque art companies or its classical recordings visitors are invited to warm up with a cup of hot tea, play the unique stone-throwing game or paint their baroque water-colour. Young visitors to the exposition will have the opportunity to participate in the drawing competition “My Frozen Vilnius”, enjoy the sweets made on the spot and listen to specially adapted Vilnius baroque stories.
After dark the town will turn into a beautiful and modern oasis of baroque with the help of artists of light. The ice objects will glimmer in different colours in and out, whereas video images demonstrated on the objects will create some kind of weightlessness, providing the opportunity to admire the alternating play of light and its transformations in ice shapes. Electronic music with authentic baroque elements playing permanently in the whole space of the town will fill up the atmosphere and complete final aesthetic strokes.
