2008-08-26 | DURING AN EXTRAORDINARY EUROPEAN COUNCIL MEETING LITHUANIA WILL CALL FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF RUSSIA’S DECISION TO RECOGNIZE THE INDEPENDENCE OF GEORGIAN ADMINISTRATIVE UNITS

Russia’s decision to formally recognize the independence of Georgian administrative units Abkhazia and South Ossetia is a gross violation of the universally accepted principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

Russia chooses a hazardous way, by exhibiting new dangerous tendencies both for Europe’s security and stability, and for the principle regarding the supremacy of international law.

During an extraordinary European Council meeting on 1 September Lithuania will call for the assessment of those actions of Russia.
