29 march 2009/ Handicraft Heritage of Vilnius: Old Tailors of Vilnius
The heritage of crafts is relevant to contemporary Vilnius seeking to revive old handicraft traditions as expression of urban culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) and to present Vilnius as the city with old European traditions. To revive these traditions, educational events will be held once monthly in historic locations of Vilnius handicraft shops.
Based on ancient technologies, the Bartholomew's Fair will introduce fine, ‘non-fine’ and ethnographic handicrafts of Vilnius craftsmen. The fair intends to attract members of ethnic minorities (Karaites, Tartars, Jews) and, thus, to disclose the historical multi-cultural characteristics of Vilnius City and its old crafts. The educational, entertaining, cultural and social impact of the project will portray Vilnius as a modern and dynamic city in which creative people design the future by reconstructing the past.
