70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIQUIDATION OF VILNIUS GHETTO WILL BE COMMEMORATED IN BRUSSELS
A commemoration of the National Memorial Day for the Genocide of the Lithuanian Jews and the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of Vilnius Ghetto will take place in the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union on September 23rd. During the event exhibition of paintings by Solomonas Teitelbaumas will be opened and a screening of a documentary “Fania’s Vilnius” by Edita Mildazyte will take place.
Members of Belgian Jewish community, representatives of the European Jewish Congress, representatives of EU institutions, diplomats and members of the Lithuanian community will attend the event upon invitation by Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the EU and Mrs. Danguole Vinciuniene, Chargée d’Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Belgium. Vice minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and the Head of Lithuanian delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Neris Germanas and Raya Kalenova, the Executive Vice President of the European Jewish Congress will speak at the event, to be followed by a video address by Faina Kukliansky, Chair of Lithuanian Jewish Community.
The painter Solomonas Teitelbaumas (born in 1972) is one of the most talented Lithuanian painters of the new generation. His works follow the tradition of the Jewish painters born in the historic territories of the Lithuania Grand Duchy.
The documentary “Fania’s Vilnius” (2013) will invite to take a tour of Vilnius as remembered by Fania Jocheles Brancovski. She is one of the few Lithuanian Jews who were able to escape death during the liquidation of Vilnius Ghetto.
2013 is announced the Year of the Remembrance of the Vilnius Ghetto by the Lithuanian Parliament. The government of the Republic of Lithuania prepared a series of events in Lithuania and abroad to commemorate the liquidation of the Vilnius Ghetto. National Memorial Day for the Genocide of the Lithuanian Jews is marked on September 23rd since 1994.
The IV congress of Litvaks is taking place in Vilnius September 22nd through 25th to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of Vilnius Ghetto.
