ANDRIUS KUBILIUS AT BEIJING UNIVERSITY: THE CRISIS WILL CONSOLIDATE EUROPE
On Thursday – his last day of the visit – Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius gave a lecture at Beijing University, during which he discussed the situation of the European Union and the prospects for the Northern Baltic Region. Mr Kubilius pointed out that despite the crises that Europe encounters in its path of development, it nevertheless emerges as an ever stronger continent. The Prime Minister holds the view that Europe will also come out as a more consolidated and unified continent from the latest crisis in the Eurozone. Therefore, it is no coincidence that José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, talks about the European federalism.
Other points that Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius touched upon in the lecture was Lithuania’s experience in overcoming the crisis, the unique, economically and financially dynamic and resourceful Northern Baltic Region, and the significance of regional integration for economic growth. In addition, the Prime Minister presented opportunities for investment in Lithuania, placing a particular importance on the high technology sector.
Before the lecture, the Prime Minister met with Zhou Qifeng, President of Beijing University, and expressed his hope about the future successful cooperation with Vilnius University (VU has recently signed a cooperation agreement with Beijing University).
Later in the day, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius met with Chen Deming, China’s Minister for Agriculture and Commerce, to discuss possibilities of closer economic cooperation. The interlocutors looked into specific options for Chinese companies, assisted by the China’s government, to manage and develop a free economic zone in Lithuania.
Andrius Kubilius also met with the management of one of the world`s largest construction companies China State Construction Engineering.
