Autumn Equinox festivities at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania
On the evening of 29th September, the Autumn Equinox Feast started in the courtyard of the Lithuanian Permanent Representation to the EU, situated in Etterbeek. The event was organized jointly by the Permanent Representation and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania. Initially, there was an idea to name the feast - which is hopefully to become a traditional yearly one under the sky of Brussels - "Jazzy Folksy Lithuania", so as to show the true nature of Lithuania. Afterwards, as we are into autumn, and in the Northern Hemisphere it means harvest, abundance and the beginning of a new season, it was decided "Autumn Equinox Feast" would present the idea in a nutshell. Lithuania is not only about energy security and Eastern Neighbourhood issues, there is much more out there to discover and discuss.
The organisers successfully showed Lithuanian heritage, handicraft, music and cuisine with the help of modern technologies. The guests had a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the handicraft of the nearly extinct, but still real Lithuanian village, namely, weaving of verbos (a wreathed bunch of dried flowers) and traditional cummerbunds, manufacturing of amber and ceramics, wood carving, beekeeping and so on. All that was showed via video installations plunged in water or projected out in space, which presented the scenery of Lithuania in photography and films by the best Lithuanian artists.
Kazimiera Prunskiene, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania, and Ambassador Rytis Martikonis, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the EU, opened the festivities, which went deep inot the night. It was aleardy 1 a.m. as the last guests left the courtyard.
