BNS: Almost half of Lithuania's population supports euro adoption - poll
VILNIUS, Oct 08, BNS - Almost a half of Lithuania's population or 49 percent are in favor of adoption the euro as the national currency, the latest poll by the public opinion and market research company RAIT has shown.
The poll commissioned by the news agency BNS has also shown 41 percent of respondents against the introduction of the single currency. Some 9 percent were undecided.
Compared with September 2007, the ranks of euro supporters and euro sceptics remained almost unchanged. The rate of supporters increased by 2 points, from 47 percent in September 2007, while the rate of sceptics shrank by 3 points, from 44 percent last year. Yet, the researchers claim that the difference is not significant considering possible error margin.
About 20 percent of Lithuania's population favor fast adoption of euro.
Some 19 percent expect the single currency to be introduced in five years at the earliest, and 10 percent - after ten years.
RAIT polled 1,023 respondents on Sept. 5-12.
