BNS: Baltic, Polish presidents call for more EU attention to Georgia, new EU role
VILNIUS, May 22, BNS - Presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland agreed in Riga on Thursday to call for more attention of the European Union (EU) to Georgia and more efficient solution of "frozen" conflicts.
In a declaration published after the meeting of Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, Polish President Lech Kaczynski, Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the president gave a positive opinion about the parliamentary election in Georgia and their importance to the country's future, the Lithuanian president's press service said.
Calculation of a third of ballots has revealed lead of the ruling party United National Movement with 63 percent of the vote, followed by the bloc of nine opposition parties with support of 13.2 percent of voters.
Election observers from Lithuania and Poland stated that the elections went without major violations.
During the meeting in Riga, the four leaders also discussed the possibility to establish new positions in the European Union, for instance, the President of the European Council and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The presidents of Latvia, Estonia and Poland extended sincere condolences on the death of Lithuanian sergeant Arunas Jarmalavicius in Afghanistan.
