BNS: EP president due on visit in Lithuania

VILNIUS, Apr 27, BNS - President of the European Parliament (EP) Hans-Gert Poettering came to Lithuania Monday on a two-day visit. His agenda for Monday evening included meetings with Parliamentary Speaker Arunas Valinskas and Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.

On Tuesday, Poettering has a meeting with President Valdas Adamkus, followed by participation in a discussion at the parliament with people of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on the upcoming EP elections.

General elections for the new term of the 736-seat EP will take place throughout Europe in the beginning of June of 2009, with the election date in Lithuania set for June 7. Lithuania gets 12 EP mandates.

Poettering, 64-year-old citizen of Germany, was elected president of the European Parliament in January of 2007.
