BNS: Euro Parliament calls on EU to ensure Baltic energy security
VILNIUS, Feb, 03, BNS - The European Parliament has called for mandatory emergency action plans in case of gas supply shortages and for more grid interconnections, especially in the Baltic countries, which are not linked to the Western European network.
"In accordance with the principle of European energy solidarity, the European Parliament seeks to ensure security of supply and of energy for the Baltic Sea region under conditions of economic recession," the European Parliament said in a report adopted on Tuesday.
The report emphasizes the importance of developing gas and electricity interconnections to ensure that all member states are linked to the grid. It underlines the need for special attention to be paid to the development of a Baltic Interconnection Plan covering gas, electricity and storage in 2009.
The European Parliament also backs the idea of creating a European "supergrid" by linking the network infrastructures of the North Sea, Mediterranean and Baltic regions.
