BNS: Lithuania has no chances to agree on extension of lifespan of Ignalina N-plant - EC President
VILNIUS, Oct 15, BNS - Lithuania has no chances to agree on the extension of lifespan of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), the European ommission President Jose Manuel Barroso reiterated during the meeting with Lithuania's Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas.
The leaders of neighboring countries have also admitted that any discussions on the extension of INPP operations are pointless and urged Lithuania to take measures for joining the Baltic power links plan, which Barroso has proposed to work out, as soon as possible, the public radio station Lietuvos Radijas (Lithuanian Radio) reports.
The leaders of European countries have pointed out that such a plan should have been launched much earlier, yet urged to delay no more in future and work hard to rectify the situation.
Kirkilas admitted to the reporters that he had heard nothing that could signal a change in Brussels' approach towards the closure of INPP.
EC President met with the prime ministers of three Baltic countries, Poland, Denmark and Finland and Sweden's foreign minister on the eve of the European Council of Oct. 15-16 to discuss the energy situation in the Baltic Sea region.
