BNS: Lithuanian formin to mull political situation in Georgia, Moldova at Brussels' meeting

VILNIUS, May 18, BNS - Lithuanian Foreign Minister Vygaudas Usackas is attending a meeting of the European Union's General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) in Brussels on Monday, with the session intended to focus on the political situation in Georgia and Moldova.


The EU foreign ministers will discuss further stance on the situation in Georgia and more efficient ways of EU mediation in the solution of the political crisis in Moldova, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.The diplomats will also prepare for the European Council's June 18-19 session and discuss preparations for the EU-Russia summit timed to take place in Khabarovsk on May 21-22.

Among other items on the agenda include the Iran's nuclear program, as the country's actions continue raising concerns of the global community. Brussels will also host a joint session of ministers of foreign affairs and defense. The meeting should address the future of the EU operation ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as solutions against continuing pirate attacks off the coasts of Somalia.

A meeting of the GAERC ministers in charge of development cooperation will take place in Brussels, as well. Lithuania's representative at the event will be the Foreign Ministry's Undersecretary Evaldas Ignatavicius.
