BNS: Lithuania's energy minister candidate sees "many unknowns" in new N-plant project

VILNIUS, Feb 03, BNS - Arvydas Sekmokas, a candidate for the position of energy minister to be newly established in Lithuania, says to be unaware as to when a new nuclear power plant could be built in Lithuania.

The country should remain a member of "nuclear club" since it had the required infrastructure and certain public support, Sekmokas told the reporters after the meeting with President Valdas Adamkus on Tuesday.

However, the project of new nuclear power plant raised numerous questions, including the capacity of the facility.

"The capacity of the plant will also determine the participation in the project. If the capacity is the maximum possible, we will be able to allocate to Poland a 1,000 MW share of output it wishes to have," Sekmokas said.

Scientific conclusions on reserve power generation capacities available in Lithuania, which would be taken into account when considering the capacity of new facility, should be readied in February, he added.
