BNS: Vilnius still fails to agree with Riga on power link with Sweden, PM admits

VILNIUS, Oct 24, BNS - Vilnius still fails to agree with Riga on the building of a power link with Sweden, Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas has admitted. Latvia was offering an absolutely different project, thus Lithuania's authorities expected the Swedish government to choose Lithuania to link its energy system with, he added.

"I hope that the Swedish government will say it clearly in Helsinki on Monday that we can launch the project. This is the goal of the European Commission (EC) as well. I hope that the Commission will help us solve this question," Kirkilas told the reporters on Friday.

Lithuania's government announced earlier this month that Latvia had finally agreed for the link to be directed to Lithuania. However, Latvia's representatives claimed later that Riga had not given its consent.

"I have to admit that we still fail to reach a final agreement with the Latvians. We lose much time again as Latvia's government probably lacks political will and it is not a project it puts forward, it is an absolutely different vision," Kirkilas said.

Lithuania's national energy company Leo LT hopes to build the link by 2016. The company's investments into the project are seen reaching some 1.1 billion litas (EUR 318.84 mln). Leo LT claims to be able to implement the project without outer support.
