The Baltic Way action was held on Aug. 23, 1989, marking 50 years since the signing of Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and secret protocols by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, which unlawfully divided Europe.
The documents created conditions for the Soviet Union to occupy the Baltic states for 50 years and appoint puppet governments there.
Marking the anniversary, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian people joined hands and created a human chain from Vilnius to Tallinn. The action was attended by about two million people who demonstrated the national revival of the three Baltic states, the viability of the idea of independence.
The world recognized the independent states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia two years later.
