BNS: Zappa family happy with likeness of performer's sculpture in Vilnius
VILNIUS, Jun 04, BNS - Family of the legendary rock musician Frank Zappa said in Vilnius that the world's only sculpture of the musician in the Lithuanian capital looked a lot like the performer and, in their words, radiated Zappa's spirit.
Manufactured as a twin of a monument in central Vilnius and to be shipped to the rock legend's hometown Baltimore, a bronze sculpture to Zappa was presented at the Vilnius City Municipality on Thursday. The ceremony was attended by the entire Zappa family: the performer's son Dweezil Zappa, daughter Diva Zappa and widow Gail Zappa. Gail Zappa thanked authors for their perfect work and the ability to reflect his spirit and even the "nose that is not so easy to do." "I'm very impressed (...). It's one of those mysteries of life and it shows that everything is possible (...). It's so gorgeous. Anytime you see the work it is so impressive (...). Remarkably well done," said Zappa's widow. Her opinion was seconded by Dweezil Zappa who is scheduled to perform in Vilnius later today as part of his tour Zappa Plays Zappa." When you see it as a photograph, it's hard to really get a good idea what it is. Its very angular in photos, but when you see it personally, actually it has very good likeness," he told journalists after the ceremony. Zappa said: "I heard about it a long time ago, but they actually never contacted our family. We know because people had traveled and told "hey, did you know that there is a statue". "In his opinion, the statue is a tribute to his father and his work, which reveals Lithuania as a country that likes and respects good music. The Zappa family received two symbols of Vilnius as gifts from the city's administration - a white angel and an iron wolf. The monument in honor of rock pioneer Frank Zappa was built in Vilnius for funds of rock enthusiasts in 1995 and remains the only monument to the rock musician and composer across the globe.
