Chess simultan held by Professor Vytautas Landsbergis on the occasion of Statehood Day of Lithuania

Yesterday in Brussels, on the occasion of Statehood Day of Lithuania, Professor Vytautas Landsbergis MEP held a chess simultan against Lithuanians living and working in Belgium. The simultan took place at the premises of the Permanent Representation of Lithuania at the EU.

The Permanent Representative of Lithuania at the EU Ambassador Rytis Martikonis welcomed the players. „This is the first time we'er commemorating our Statehood Day  in such way,“ said the Ambassador.“ We are grateful to Professor Landsbergis that he agreed to hold a simultan.. I believe such event would become a tradition in the Belgium based Lithuanian community“. 

Professor Vytautas Landsbergis was confronted by  Marius Vaščėga and Arnoldas Pranckevičius of the European Parliament, Arnoldas Milukas of the European Commission, Raimundas Matulevičius of the University of Namur, Tomas Karmanovas of the Cottyn-Lecoutre Lawyers' Company, Tomas Kuprys, Ramūnas Stanionis and Dainoras Žiukas of the Permanent Representation, as well as by the  physicist Algirdas Keršys. The President of the Chess Club of Brussels-Woluwe Raymond van Melsen, whose club lent chessboards and chessfigures to the Representation, also participated in the simultan.

The simultan went for more than four hours. 

Raimundas Matulevičius was the only one who prevailed over the Professor. Vytautas Landsbergis sugessted a draw to Dainoras Žiukas and Algirdas Keršys, and the rest of the players (seven altogether)  lost to the Professor in the game that went on for more than four hours.
