COMMON ENERGY MARKET – STRONGER AND SAFER EUROPE

Minister of Energy Jaroslav Neverovič took part in panel discussion „The Sixteenth Lithuanian Government: Main Objectives and Challenges", organized by American Chamber of Commerce. During his speech, Minister presented the aims of the 16th Government, strategic energy projects and the priorities of Lithuanian Presidency of the European Council.

„Lithuania still remains an isolated energy island, which is why our main objective is to integrate into European energy system and to strengthen our energy security. We must pay special attention to implementation of strategic projects – especially gas and electricity interconnections and liquefied natural gas terminal” – said minister of Energy. According to the minister, Europe with developed energy infrastructure and common open energy market would become even stronger player.

Functional common energy market means energy security and competitive energy prices for European customers. Energy market will be one of the main priorities during the Lithuanian Presidency of the European Council.

„By implementing strategic projects of energy infrastructure Lithuania is firmly stepping forward to the end of energy isolation. During Lithuanian Presidency the will be steps made to implement the aims the EU has set back in 2011. These aims are finalization of EU common energy market until 2014 and to eliminate the remaining emery islands until 2015. Finalization of common energy market would be a huge accomplishment for the whole EU“– said Minister of Energy.

J. Neverovič also stressed that USA is an important actor in global fight with climate change. Its determination to speed up the transition to more sustainable sources of energy highly corresponds with ambitious EU carbon emission reduction targets.

US is not only Lithuanian supporter in achieving our energy independence, but important external EU partner as well. The EU-US Energy Council is an effective platform for the exchange of best practice, discussions and common decisions on bilateral cooperation like Energy Star, electric vehicles, energy efficiency, etc. J. Neverovič expressed his hope that cooperation with US in the fields of knowledge and technology will continue.
