DALIA GRYBAUSKAITĖ PRESENTED LETTERS OF CREDENCE TO LITHUANIA’S AMBASSADOR TO BELARUS

President Dalia Grybauskaitė presented letters of credence to Linas Linkevičius, Lithuanian ambassador to Belarus.

According to the President, Belarus was a close and important neighbor of Lithuania, with whom we maintained many-sided relations which should be developed on an equal, constructive and mutually beneficial basis.

The President underlined that it was important for the people of Lithuania and Belarus to be given a possibility to keep unrestricted contacts. Therefore Lithuania was interested to have the facilitated border-crossing procedure introduced as quickly as possible.

Lithuania and Belarus were also linked by close economic ties and it was necessary to ensure their development in line with common European rules and principles.

The President further said that Lithuania was interested in the renewal of a dialogue between the European Union and Belarus, based on European norms and values.

Linas Linkevičius is Lithuania's fifth ambassador to Belarus. He was twice minister of national defense, from 1993 to 1996 and from 2000 to 2004. He served as the Lithuanian Permanent Representative to NATO from 2005 until 2011. Since 2011, before his assignment to Belarus, Linas Linkevičius was Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
