Discussion on the imperialism and decolonisation of Russian culture happened at the European Parliament in Brussels

On 7 March, the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels hosted a discussion entitled "Pushing Pushkin: the imperialism and decolonisation of Russian culture," featuring the British writer and security expert Edward Lucas and the Lithuanian art historian and writer Dr. Kristina Sabaliauskaite.

Around 200 participants gathered to listen to this discussion on the exploitation of culture by Russian imperialism, the supremacy of so-called "high" Russian culture in the eyes of foreigners, the links between the creation of the imperialist state, and the seemingly innocent imagery and literary works.

  • What are the next steps?
  • Can (or should) Russian culture undergo the same "decolonisation" that is currently being advocated in the West?
  • If so, is this a task for foreign critics of the Putin regime, or is it for Russians themselves to do?

We invite you to hear the answers to these and other questions in this discussion.

The event was co-sponsored and co-hosted by MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union together with Ambassador Arnoldas Pranckevičius and MEP Raphaël Glucksmann.
