Energy security is vitally important for European countries

Thursday, October 23, Brussels - President Dalia Grybauskaitė is attending a European Council meeting where the EU's energy and climate policy and measures aimed at strengthening the energy independence of the Union are discussed.

"Due to high energy dependence on a single supplier, European countries pay a high political price. Therefore, the ensuring of energy security is a vital interest of the whole EU. The liquefied natural gas terminal to be launched in Lithuania is our country's significant contribution to promoting energy independence of the region and the entire EU. Also, it is necessary to continue the work started: to successfully complete the creation of the EU's single energy market and eliminate energy islands in the Community," the President said.

According to President Grybauskaitė, further development of the EU's energy infrastructure and the connection of Baltic power transmission systems to the Continental Europe and Nordic countries will ensure our regional energy independence and competitive energy prices for Lithuanian people.

The leaders will also discuss the EU's climate policy as well as measures designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost energy efficiency.

The Lithuanian head of state noted that ambitious commitments to reduce greenhouse gases should not undermine global economic competitiveness of the European Union. Therefore, it is essential to avoid imposing too heavy a burden on industry and ensure that environmental responsibilities are distributed fairly among the member states taking into account their economic capacities.
