EUROPEAN COMMISSION’S PROPOSED EU AID DISTRIBUTION PRINCIPLE DOES NOT SATISFY LITHUANIA

President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn.

The meeting focused on the preparation for negotiations on the EU financial framework for the period 2014 - 2020 and the European Cohesion Policy.

According to the President, the principle of distribution of the EU aid, which has been proposed by the European Commission, does not satisfy Lithuania.

In distributing the EU aid, account should be taken of the interests and the level of development of each country, the President said. During negotiations, Lithuania will seek the review of the principles of distribution of structural aid.

PRIME MINISTER AND COMMISSIONER JOHANNES HAHN DISCUSS THE EU FINANCIAL FRAMEWORK 2014–2020

Today, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has welcomed Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner responsible for regional policy. The meeting has covered EU regional policy, structural assistance for Lithuania in 2014–2020, the EU's financial framework.

“EU structural assistance is very important for Lithuania. Until this moment, Lithuania has been successfully absorbing the funds. The current proposal of the European Commission envisages a substantially reduced structural allocation for the three Baltic States in the next financial framework, but we are still hopeful to negotiate a satisfactory solution”, said the Prime Minister after the meeting with the Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

The Prime Minister has expressed his conviction about the EU emerging stronger and more consolidated from the current crisis. “The EU must think, however, how to strengthen its overall financial resources to continue to support regional policy and other initiatives that will enable Europe to compete successfully in the global market”, said Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.
