FILM ABOUT LITHUANIA’S SINGING REVOLUTION TO MARK THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF ACCESSION TO THE EU

On June 25, 2014 a documentary “How we played the Revolution” (2011) by a young Lithuanian director Giedrė Žičkytė will be screened in Bozar Arts Center in Brussels. The audience will also have the opportunity to meet the film director. The Lithuanian film will close the film festival “Freedom, Cinema, Europe”, which takes place 23-25 June in Brussels, marking the 10th anniversary of the 2004 EU accession of the 10 member states -  Lithuania, Cyprus, Check Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Poland.

The film tells a story of a small country, a special period in the history of its people, who despite all danger gained their Independence with smiles on their faces and with song in their lips.

The story of the film begins in 1984, the very beginning of perestroika in USSR, when a group of architects decided to organize a one night music band as a New Year’s party joke in Kaunas, Lithuania. The joke proved to be so good that rumors about the new exciting rock band ANTIS began spreading by word of mouth. Imposing make-up and props, stylized show, and lyrics created pervasive caricature of the Soviet propaganda and perfectly discredited the absurdity of Soviet reality. Soon their intellectual clownery grew into the Rock Marches - massive events involving thousands of people - that eventually transformed into the big meetings for Lithuanian Independence later named the Singing Revolution.

The screening starts at 7.30 pm, duration - 67 min. After the film the audience is kindly invited for a glass of wine.
