Film director Arunas Matelis visits Brussels

On 18 September last, the Lithuanian film director Arunas Matelis visited the Permanent Representation. He introduced to us his documentary film „Before Flying Back to the Earth“(2005). The film has received not less than thirteen international awards, among them - the Directors Guild of America Award 2006 for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary.

„Before Flying Back to the Earth“ makes a saga of an hour about children with cancer and their parents, about how is to be living in the „space station“(hospital) – hanging between Earth and Heaven - and not knowing which direction you shall fly to.

Warmly and without arrogance talked Arunas Matelis to the Representation‘s people.
At this stage Arunas Matelis creates no new film, lives in a village and enjoys farming.
And why Arunas Matelis came to Brussels? The European Commission, commemorating 50th Anniversary of the Rome Treaty, every week introduces an eminent film of each of 27 Member States. The Lithuanian Ministry of Culture selected for that occasion the film by Arunas Matelis. The film was shown at the Berlaymont also on 18th September; therefore Arunas Matelis had to leave the Representation early.

And we watched his film without him.
