FIRST IN SIX YEARS MEETING BETWEEN LITHUANIAN AND RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTERS

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius began his working visit to Moscow by meeting Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The Novo-Ogariovo residence had been chosen as a meeting venue.

The meeting was opened by Prime Minister Putin’s salutations to Andrius Kubilius for having taken his invitation to meet and participate at the opening of the International Rostropovich Festival. The Russian Prime Minister pointed out that this was the first meeting of Prime Ministers of neighbouring countries after 6-year break.

Vladimir Putin expressed delight at a good opportunity to discuss bilateral relations and trade issues, which, according to the Russian Prime Minister “are not bad, but could certainly be better”. The Russian Head of Government was also interested in discussing energy.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Kubilius thanked his counterpart for the opportunity to meet and discuss important bilateral issues, and invited him to come to the Baltic Council meeting to be held early June.

The Lithuanian Prime Minister told his counterpart that Lithuania, as planned, is heading towards energy independence and informed about the plans to build a new modern nuclear power plant following the closure of the Ignalina nuclear power plant with the EU assistance.

The Lithuanian Prime Minister expressed his delight that problems related to the supply of dairy products to Russia have been sorted out.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister made a suggestion that the Head of the Russian Government could talk to Gazprom on price modernization when responding to the developments in the global gas market.

Kubilius also mentioned Lithuania’s intention to build LNG terminal. The counterparts continued their conversation behind the closed doors.

Before the reporters left the residence building, Vladimir Putin joked saying that he happened to win at an Open Sambo Championships in Lithuania some time before, so he would be quite happy to relive the success moment again in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Prime Minister responded that he was not sure about the Sambo Championship, but he would be happy to compete on bicycle track if Vladimir Putin comes to visit Lithuania in June.
