HIGH OFFICIAL OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION EXPRESSED INTEREST IN THE NATIONAL AGREEMENT INITIATED BY LITHUANIAN GOVERNMENT
Today Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius met Elena Flores, Head of the Directorate for the Economies of the Member States of the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission, paying a visit in Lithuania.
At present the official of the European Commission is visiting the Baltic States with the aim of collecting information on the achievements of the countries to overcome the outcome of the biggest global economic crisis after the World War II.
During the meeting, Elena Flores expressed her interest in the National Agreement initiated by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania the aim of which is to reach an agreement with the social partners on measures for the consolidation of the State finances, support of business and improvement of business environment seeking to maintain as many workplaces as possible. Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius presented a summary of how the National Agreement has evolved stressing that responsibility bearing position of social partners in the context of a unique economic and financial crisis in the country allows to hope that this important document uniting different interest groups will soon be signed.
Elena Flores is of the opinion that the signed National Agreement of Lithuania could become an example for other EU Member States struggling with the outcomes of the global crisis.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius also informed the European Commission representative about the planned and ongoing structural reforms in Lithuania in the areas of higher education, health and social care.
According to Elena Flores, it is important that the Lithuanian Government, after starting with minor steps to curb crisis impact, moves on to structural reforms that would lay the groundwork for the State’s long-term sustainable development and economic competitiveness. Elena Flores encouraged the Lithuanian Government to continue along the path towards difficult, but necessary changes and, in her turn, assured that the European Commission would make every effort to ensure that the planned financial instruments within the EU structural funds to promote Lithuania’s economy are running smoothly.
