LITHUANIA AND LATVIA COORDINATE POSITIONS ON EU FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Wednesday, November 7, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė had a telephone conversation with Latvian President Andris Bērziņš. The Presidents discussed preparation for the upcoming special European Council meeting and Lithuania-Latvia negotiating positions on the EU budget 2014-2020.
The Presidents of Lithuania and Latvia have agreed to strive together during negotiations on the seven-year budget of the European Union that the interests of the Baltic States are not impaired while allocating the EU funds.
Both countries see as their priority to achieve that agricultural payments ensure equal competitive conditions to farmers of the new and old member states. Lithuania and Latvia also share a common view that discriminatory reductions of the EU structural funding should be eliminated.
The current Cyprus Presidency of the European Union proposes cuts to the EU's multiannual financial framework for 2014 -2020.
A new budget will be in the focus of discussions at the European Council meeting in Brussels, 22-23 November.
The leaders of Lithuania and Latvia also touched upon the forthcoming meeting of the three Presidents of the Baltic States to be held at the invitation of Dalia Grybauskaitė on 28 November in Raudondvaris.
