Lithuania and Poland to hold consultations on negotiating mandate on the new EU-Russia PCA

Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas had a phone conversation with the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk today. The two Prime Ministers discussed the situation regarding the negotiating mandate for a new EU-Russia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, and agreed to continue to coordinate their positions.

Kirkilas stressed that Lithuania, similarly to the other EU member states, wanted to start negotiations; however, Lithuania wanted to include into the negotiating mandate questions that had already been raised yet Russia had not given answers to them. According to Kirkilas, the issues of frozen conflicts in Georgia and Moldova, EU-Russia cooperation in the field of justice, and energy security are in the interests of the entire EU, and asked for Poland’s support.
Tusk said he understood Lithuania’s position and agreed with Kirkilas’s proposal to continue consultations on the EU negotiating mandate between the Lithuanian and Polish diplomats in the short run.
