LITHUANIA STRENGTHENS COMMON SECURITY AND DEFENCE POLICY COOPERATION WITH THE EU EASTERN PARTNERS

Today, 24th September, the Round Table discussion dedicated to civilian CSDP cooperation with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine took place at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU in Brussels. Possibilities to contribute to CSDP missions and experience from participation at international missions or hosting such missions were discussed with representatives of European External Action Service and Lithuania.

Lithuanian representative to the EU Political and Security Committee, ambassador Dainius Petras Kamaitis, underlined the necessity to strengthen such cooperation at the time, when the EU and some of the EU Eastern Partnership countries experience direct challenges to their security.

Mindaugas Rukštelė, Head of International Missions and Conflict Prevention Division of the Lithuanian MFA, highlighted the existing potential for deepening security dialogue and practical cooperation with Eastern Partnership countries and informed about Lithuanian efforts to support those activities.

Participants of the event were briefed about the cooperation among the United Nations (UN), Organisation of European Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), North Atlantic Council Organisation (NATO) and the EU in civilian crisis management.

The representatives of think-tanks provided their views on the best practices how to organise CSDP related public communication.

Today’s discussion was the second on of similar subject. The first meeting was initiated by Lithuania one year ago, during its Presidency to the Council of EU in the second half of 2013.
