LITHUNIAN PRESIDENT WELCOMES IRELAND'S REFERENDUM RESULTS
Saturday, October 3, Vilnius - Following a "yes" vote to the Lisbon Treaty by Irish citizens in a nation-wide referendum, President Dalia Grybauskaitė said: "The decision of the Irish people opens the road to the whole of Europe to become more effective and to implement the necessary institutional reforms.
The dialogue which will be facilitated between member states within the European Union will not only make it easier for Europe to recover more rapidly from the economic downturn, but will also help avoid such large-scale crises in the future. For Lithuania, the Lisbon Treaty creates the required preconditions to participate actively and effectively in the EU decision making process. I will devote my utmost attention to have the agreements set forth in the Treaty successfully translated into practice. I hope that those EU member states which have not as yet completed the ratification process will do so in the near future."
