MINISTER OF ENERGY MET WITH THE MEMBERS OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

January 30, 2013, Brussels. Minister of Energy Jaroslav Neverovič met with former President of the European Parliament, member of Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee Jerzy Buzek and Vice-president of the European Parliament, member of ITRE Committee Alejo Vidal-Quadras.

During the meetings held in Brussels, Minister of Energy and members of European Parliament discussed the priorities of Lithuanian Presidency of the European Council concerning internal European energy market and strengthening of the external dimension of the European energy policy. The possibilities of cooperation between Lithuania and European parliament in these areas were also discussed.

Minister J. Neverovič has presented Lithuania's priorities in energy sector and stressed that strategic projects in the energy sector, such as LNG terminal, electricity and gas links and other projects needed to ensure creation of competitive market in energy sector will be implemented as soon as possible. According to the Minister, electricity and gas interconnections between Lithuania and other EU countries will be vital while seeking for the essential goal - to strengthen Lithuania‘s energy independence.

During the meetings with the members of European Parliament the issues of Ignalina's nuclear power plant decommissioning projects and their further implementation were also discussed. J. Neverovič stressed that it is of great importance to Lithuania that in this case the 4 protocol of Lithuania's EU Accession Treaty would be taken as a legal background (not the EURATOM treaty).

EP ITRE Committee will give its opinion regarding financial support for Lithuanian, Bulgarian and Slovak nuclear power plants decommissioning projects during the next financial perspective (2014-2020).

Minister Jaroslav Neverovič was visiting Brussels with the delegation of Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.
