New Prime Minister to head for Brussels

On 10-12 December, new Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius is leaving on his first working visit to Brussels to take part at the European Council where the heads of states and governments intend to focus on energy, climate change, economy reinvigoration, and stability of financial markets and other issues of EU importance. Prime Minister’s agenda also includes meetings with heads and representatives of EU institutions. The Prime Minister will look into the possibilities of raising EU support financial package for Lithuania for 2007-2013 with a special focus on energy projects and important economic sectors.


In the first half of the day on 10 December (Wednesday), Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius meets European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Dalia Grybauskaitė, Member of the European Commission, responsible for financial programming and budget. A meeting with Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for enterprise and industry Günter Verheugen as well as participation at the ceremony marking the International day of Human Rights ant the European Parliament have been foreseen for the afternoon of the same day.

On 11 December (Thursday), Prime Minister meets President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union Javier Solana, and Member of the European Commission responsible for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquín Almunia. The Prime Minister is also to participate in the meeting of the Nordic and Baltic Prime Ministers. In the afternoon, Prime Minister and leader of the Homeland Union-Christian Democrats Andrius Kubilius is going to attend the summit of the European People’s Party at the Belgium Royal Academy.

On 11-12 December, Prime Minister is to participate in the European Council, where views will be exchanged on energy and climate change, economic and financial affairs (plan for reforming the European financial system), ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, external relations and security (European Neighbourhood Policy, European Security and Defence Policy), and the Common Agricultural Policy.

The Prime Minister returns to Vilnius on Friday afternoon (12 December).
