Panel Discussion on the EU Enlargement and Institutional Reforms in Brussels

On 14th November — The Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU hosted a two-panel discussion, bringing together key stakeholders, think tank experts, diplomats, and policymakers to delve into critical aspects of European Union enlargement, institutional reforms, and the recently released Enlargement Package by the European Commission.

The event, opened by the Lithuanian Permanent Representative Ambassador Arnoldas Pranckevičius, provided a platform for conversations on the future of the European Union, particularly emphasizing the ongoing enlargement process and the debate on the institutional changes shaping the EU's trajectory.

Distinguished guests included European Ministers from Lithuania, Finland, Germany, Sweden, and Romania, who contributed valuable insights into their respective nations' perspectives on EU enlargement. Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi brought important input on the recently released Enlargement Package, sparking dynamic discussions on its implications and future path.

The first panel, moderated by Ms. Lykke Friis, Director of Think Tank Europa, delved into the internal EU debates on the enlargement process, building on the presentation of the upcoming European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) report. The participating European Ministers shared their nations' outlook, as well as raised questions on if and what reforms are necessary, what homework must be done to ensure public support for the enlargement process, and the pressing question of setting a date for enlargement.

The second panel, moderated by Mr Linas Kojala, Director of the Eastern Europe Studies Centre, focused on the progress of the candidate countries. The panel was opened with a presentation of a report by the EESC, which took note of lessons learned from the Turkish and the Western Balkan experience, as well as different enlargement methodologies. Attendees engaged in a robust exchange of ideas, suggestions, and overviews.

The event underscored the ongoing debates of EU member states in shaping the future of the Union. As discussions unfolded, it became evident that the shared commitment to enlargement is integral to ensuring the European Union remains a dynamic, inclusive, and resilient community.

The Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU extends its gratitude to all participants for their invaluable contributions, fostering a rich dialogue on future policy decisions within the European Union.
