Power Link – Focus of Discussion with EU Commissioner

Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas, at his meeting with the member of the European Commission in charge of Energy Andris Piebalgs, assured that Lithuania is ready to sign an agreement with Poland on establishing a company for developing an electricity link project. The Prime Minister stressed that it is important to Lithuania that the agreement is signed.

In the Commissioners’ view, the electricity connector between Lithuania and Poland cannot be linked with the construction of a new nuclear plant.

The Prime Minister also informed the Commissioner that the Government would commission a study on the economic safety in Lithuania from 2010, which would assess the actual situation in the Lithuanian energy sector after the closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Plant. Then, according to the Prime Minister, the Government could consult the European Commission when looking for possible solutions.

The Commissioner recommended that, when preparing the impact assessment study of the closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Plant, co-operation should be sought with the European Reconstruction and Development Bank.
