President Adamkus: It would be a shame for Europe if it failed to protect Georgia
Tuesday, August 12, Simferopol, Crimea – President of the Republic of Lithuania has arrived at Simferopol, on his way together with Polish, Ukrainian and Estonian presidents and Latvian prime minister to Georgia by the Polish President Lech Kaczyński's airplane.
Giving an assessment of the situation when Russia has declared ending its military operation in Georgia, Lithuania's President underlined in a press conference held in Simferopol that this does not put the aggression against this sovereign country to an end.
"Russian armed forces are still present in Georgia and the country's infrastructure is continued to be destructed. There is still an open wound of war in the Caucasus region," President Adamkus said.
Mr. Adamkus underlined that the alien army must be immediately withdrawn from Georgian territory. "The renewal of Russia's military operation is out of question. It would be a great shame for Europe if it failed to protect the ruined Georgia which will never measure up to Russia either by its size or resources," Lithuania's President said.
Leaders of the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine plan to meet with President Mikheil Saakashvili and other Georgian high officials. Also, a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy who arrives at Tbilisi today evening is planned.
