President Adamkus met with Poland’s President in Brussels
7th November, Brussels – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus met with the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynski at the premises of the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU, just before the informal meeting of European heads of states/governments today.
The two heads of states discussed the situation in the financial sector and its prospects in the face of economic slowdown. President Adamkus underlined the need to strengthen public confidence in financial institutions. Lithuanian and Polish presidents agreed that the financial crisis had only indirect impact on all economies, manifested in lower borrowings and slower economic growth.
Discussing the situation in Georgia, the heads of states underlined that the EU must not put up with Russia not keeping to its promise to withdraw troops to pre-conflict positions. According to President Adamkus and President Kaczynski, on the threshold of important meetings the EU must not make concessions to Russia on fundamental issues.
