President Adamkus talked with U.S. President George Bush
Thursday, August 14, Vilnius – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus had a telephone conversation with the President of the United States George W. Bush.
The President believes that for this reason the European Union and other Western states must send to Georgia a vast mission of peacekeepers, observers and other monitors who will record the illegal actions by Russian troops. Later, the international community should make a principled assessment from the legal perspective.
Lithuania's President said that Georgia's territorial integrity and the withdrawal of the occupation army must be the main objectives to be pursued by the international community after military actions are discontinued in Georgia. "We welcome the vast humanitarian mission sent by the U. S. to Georgia. Lithuania will also continue providing assistance to the people hit by the war. We will insist that the EU carries out this important mission in Georgia," President Adamkus said.
Welcoming the efforts made by the French Presidency of the EU, Lithuania's Head of State underlined that Lithuania would continue to work actively within the European Union and together with other countries towards the end of aggression against Georgia.
President Adamkus also underlined that Lithuania was concerned about statements by some Russian ambassadors in the Baltic States and Poland that these states would feel the consequences of their support to Georgia.
The U.S. President thanked Lithuania's President for taking initiatives and visiting Georgia and informed him about the goals of the U.S. humanitarian mission in this country.
President Bush congratulated Lithuania's President on the Lithuanian basketball victory over the Russian team in the Beijing Olympics. "We will be a diehard in the finals," Mr. Adamkus said.
