PRESIDENT GRYBAUSKAITĖ WILL ATTEND A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL IN BRUSSELS

July 16, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will travel to Brussels for a special meeting of the European Council.

EU leaders meeting in Brussels will give their final endorsement to Jean-Claude Juncker, former Luxembourg Prime Minister and Eurozone chief, as the next President of the European Commission. Today the European Parliament elected him in a secret ballot to head the Commission.

The special meeting will also discuss nominations for the new President of the European Council and the new High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to replace Herman Van Rompuy and Catherine Ashton.

Among the other issues on the agenda are the developing situation in Ukraine and the EU's possible countermeasures to stop the further escalation of conflict. At the June summit, the European Council stated its strong expectation that Russia should release all hostages, return border checkpoints to the Ukrainian authorities, implement President Poroshenko's peace plan and launch a large verification mechanism, monitored by the OSCE. However, these conditions are not being fulfilled. Press Service of the President
