President urges Lithuania's diplomats to continue defending national public interests

Wednesday, May 14, Vilnius – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekunas. They discussed the compromise reached Sunday, on the inclusion of Lithuania’s interests in the EU mandate for negotiations with Russia and the further deliberations currently ongoing in Brussels regarding the agreement reached in Vilnius.


The President welcomes the efforts of Lithuania’s diplomatic corps, underlining that it is just the beginning of the process.

“Issues raised by Lithuania are not only our direct concern. Compensation measures for deportees are important for Latvia and Estonia too, energy security is a concern for the whole region, and successful resolution of ”frozen” conflicts becomes increasingly important for the whole international community”, Valdas Adamkus said.

President urged Lithuania’s diplomats to continue defending national public interests and looking for acceptable compromises, but not at the expense of Lithuania’s essential interests. President underlined that Lithuania did not have the aim of blocking the negotiations between the EU and Russia.
