PRIME MINISTER KKUBILIUS: LITHUANIA IS CAPABLE TO WIN IN GLOBAL COMPETITION

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius and the official government delegation took part in the Lithuanian World Economic Forum in London, where he gave a speech at the famous London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The speech on Lithuania’s prospects for the next twenty years was listened to by the overflowing audience. A. Kubilius introduced the essence of the vision 2030, and noted the strategic aim to develop the widest possible dialogue with the Lithuanian society, and the Lithuanian diasporas abroad, as well as Lithuania’s friends and neighbours with a view to crystallizing the idea of Lithuania we would all like to live in.

"The strategy development is coupled with the desire to create an ambitious vision of what Lithuania we could have in 20 years time, trying to discern the main opportunities and major challenges. I see Lithuania as one of the very strong North-Baltic region countries, capable to compete in the global economy. I can see Lithuania as a country which relies on smart technology and reason. We have all the potential needed for that. To make the vision workable, it is not only us, the authorities, that need to change, but also public mentality and other things to that matter"- said the Prime Minister.

"I am delighted that more and more of leading companies in high-tech and innovations opt for Lithuania as the best place to set up their service centres. This shows that we are able to overcome the global competition for talent and attract high technology and create the best conditions for investment", - said Andrius Kubilius.

According to the Prime Minister, Lithuania and its people have recently undergone a number of significant changes. Lithuania has become a member and a full-fledged representative at NATO, the EU, global trade and many other major global organizations and institutions. Currently, Lithuania is carrying out necessary modernization reforms, some of them being complex and painful. However, the dynamic and energetic country is committed to creating an innovative Lithuania, which has every opportunity to become a modern Nordic high-tech and information technology services hub. "We believe we can achieve very much. But we must see the main challenges very clearly, and know what we need to change in our economic and educational policies, and that we need to develop a creative society and people`s ability to compete globally”, - said Andrius Kubilius.

"Not only this type of investment creates new jobs in Lithuania and increases service export opportunities, but also enables Lithuania to make a breakthrough towards high added-value economy. I know that Barclays, IBM, "Fermento", "Western Union" will be followed by a number of other prominent companies. We hope that the new type of jobs will make return our professionals from abroad. This has already proven to be true, and I am sure that it will become a rule in the near future as the investments grow", - said A. Kubilius in response to the question about the emigration.

"Everything is OK with Lithuania. We have challenges as well as our inherited complexes to overcome, but we have every opportunity to be a very successful country here in the region, a country capable of global competition", - said the Lithuanian Prime Minister in conclusion.

LSE is one of the best universities in the world providing social, political and economic training. The University was founded back in 1895. It served as a cradle of education for 15 Nobel Prize winners, British and international politicians, top officials, and public figures. Earliet this year, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius gave speeches on Lithuania`s achievements at Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
