Prof. E. Aleksandravičius and the Lithuanians in Belgium discussed the Lithuanian world history
On the 15th of October, in Brussels, there was held a presentation of the book by prof. Egidijus Aleksandravičius „Willow Sprout: A History of the Lithuanian World“ (in Lithuanian, 2013). The event was organized in cooperation between the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU, Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Belgium, Lithuanian Community in Belgium and its Brussels Debate Club.
In the welcoming speech Ambassador-at large, Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU, Mr. Arūnas Vinčiūnas welcomed all the guests at the event. He said that the discussion that evening would be very useful for the Lithuanians, who found their second home in Belgium, as it would help to take a look at the wider perspective at the Lithuanian nation which is scattered all over the world and its history and identity. Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Belgium Gediminas Varvuolis added that in the globalized world it is very important to promote community spirit, political awareness of the Lithuanians living abroad and their participation in the political and social life in Lithuania.
During the discussion “Patriotism versus globality in nowadays emigration” that took place afterwards, prof. Aleksandravičius and the audience shared their insights on the wide scope of the Lithuanian migration, its influence on nation’s self – concept and the most important issues of the present-day Lithuanian nation and state.
