SOLAR ENERGY INDUSTRY DEVELOPING IN LITHUANIA

Next week Lithuania’s first factory of solar batteries will start operations in the capital city Vilnius. The new "Precizika-MET SC” plant, founded by UAB "Modernios E-technologijos” and UAB "Precizika Metrology”, occupies the area of 1300 sq. meters, employs around 25 specialists and is the result of EUR 2.9 million investments. The solar batteries for photoelectric power plants produced in the new factory will be exported to Korea and the Netherlands.

The Association of Photovoltaic Technology and Business, founded on 29 September, 2009 in Lithuania and uniting 24 business entities (UAB "Modernios E-technologijos” and UAB "Precizika Metrology” among them) and institutions of higher education has set an aim to develop a new high-tech industry in Lithuania - manufacture of solar energy technologies, covering the widest possible technologies and products of value added chain. The "Precizika-MET SC” plant and other projects, which have been already launched in Lithuania, e.g. a 8000 sq. meters solar elements production plant to be finished by 2012, make up the nucleus of the new industry in Lithuania.

Currently renewable energy makes up 11.4 precent of energy produced and approximately 4.6 precent of electricity produced in Lithuania. The usage of renewable energy in Lithuania is constantly growing, e.g. in 2007 Lithuania used 25.1 precent more renewable energy than in the year 2000. It is expected that the usage of biomass in electricity generation will rise nine fold between 2009 and 2017.
