STRENGTHENING ENERGY SECURITY IS PRIORITY FOR LITHUANIA AND EU
Monday, January 21, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with foreign ambassadors resident in and accredited to Lithuania to discuss Lithuania's preparations for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the strengthening of energy and military security, regional cooperation, and the political situation in the country.
ËU Presidency is a historical task for which Lithuania is preparing very responsibly. We will aim to be an honest and reliable broker in addressing the issues of major importance for entire Europe: negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2014-2020, the single banking supervision mechanism, and instruments to deal with the consequences of the economic crisis," the President underlined at a traditional meeting.
According to President Dalia Grybauskaitė, the adjustment of European and national interests is an essential task for every member state holding the presidency, therefore, Lithuania will focus equally both on the common EU agenda and the matters relevant for the Baltic region - the integration of the Baltic States into the EU's internal energy market, external borders control, the Baltic Sea Region Strategy, and the EU Eastern Partnership.
"To strengthen energy security is among key priorities of Lithuania and EU. Therefore, we will make every effort to advance closer integration of the internal energy market and the creation of common energy infrastructure. In the regional integration context, the construction and completion of power interconnections with Sweden and Poland are extremely important for Lithuania," the President noted.
Transatlantic cooperation and enhancing Lithuania's military security, closer collaboration between the Baltic and Nordic countries as well as good neighborly relations, according to the President, remain as continuing priorities on Lithuania's foreign policy agenda.
The meeting was attended by ambassadors from almost 60 countries.
