On 13 October in Brussels, the National Museum of Lithuania (LNM) received one of Europe’s most prestigious cultural heritage distinctions – the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2025. The museum was honoured for the support initiative “The Culture of Ukraine Has No Means of Defence”, organised together with LRT, Stiprūs kartu, and partners — the Lithuanian Museums Association and the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO — to assist Ukraine’s cultural heritage affected by the war.
“The European Heritage Award for the National Museum of Lithuania reminds us that culture and shared values are the bond that strengthens Europe. By supporting the preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage, the people of Lithuania demonstrate that our solidarity goes beyond words – and will continue until Ukraine’s victory,” said Lithuania’s Ambassador to the EU, Nerijus Aleksiejūnas.
The initiative “The Culture of Ukraine Has No Means of Defence” united Lithuanian society and institutions around a shared goal — to raise funds and provide essential equipment for Ukrainian museums, archives, and heritage preservation professionals. The funds collected were used to purchase and deliver much-needed conservation materials and tools, helping safeguard cultural objects damaged during the war.
The European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards, established by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, annually recognise outstanding achievements in preserving and promoting Europe’s cultural heritage. Funded by the EU’s Creative Europe programme, they represent the highest distinction in the heritage field.
