THE PRESIDENT ATTENDS EUROPEAN SUMMIT IN BRUSSELS
President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė goes to Brussels to attend a two-day meeting of the European Council, where European leaders are going to discuss amendments to the EU Treaty to allow for the establishment of a permanent mechanism of support to countries in financial difficulty.
The President of Lithuania has said this permanent support mechanism will be used to bail out eurozone countries facing financial problems due to the recent crisis and prevent destabilization of the whole euro-zone. According to the President, a strong EU, a stable Euro and well-functioning EU financial markets are a common concern for Lithuania and the whole Europe."As the Litas is already pegged to the Euro and Lithuania plans to integrate into the Eurozone in the future, any complications in the Eurozone have adverse repercussions on our country, too," the President says.
The President points out it is also necessary to ensure efficient functioning of the existing mechanisms of financial support to non-eurozone countries.
The European Council meeting will be preceded by a NB6 meeting, where heads of Nordic and Baltic states and governments will discuss issues of importance to the Baltic Sea region and preparations for the Council meeting.
