THE PRESIDENT TO ATTEND NATO SUMMIT

Wednesday, September 3, Vilnius - On 4-5 September, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will attend the NATO summit in Wales, United Kingdom, to discuss long-term measures for ensuring the security of our region. 

As Russia's military aggression is growing, NATO leaders will debate concrete actions to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Alliance. Agreement will be sought on a more visible and permanent allied presence in our region, NATO's enhanced readiness to respond quickly to threats, continued renewal of defense plans for the Baltic countries, regular military exercises, and ability to respond to cyber and energy security threats. According to the President, these measures are necessary for ensuring both regional and transatlantic security.

Allied leaders will also discuss the situation in Ukraine. A trust fund is expected to be established at the Summit to help Ukraine overcome current military threats, carry through security reforms and deepen cooperation with NATO. The President said that Lithuania was ready to contribute to the fund and would call on other members of the Alliance to do the same.

Among the other issues to be discussed at the Summit is a package of cooperation measures for Georgia and relations with Moldova as they seek closer association with NATO.

Allied leaders will also discuss the NATO-Afghanistan relationship and the implementation of the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan. Lithuania also will contribute to this mission.
