“We have to find a solution acceptable to all countries”, said President Adamkus on the future of the Lisbon Treaty
Friday, June 20, Brussels – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus takes part in the second working session of the European Council.During the discussion by the European Council on the future of the Lisbon Treaty, the President of Lithuania underlined his respect to the choice of the Irish people.
“We have to analyse thoroughly the reasons behind the Irish decision before we decide how to move forward”, President Adamkus said.
According to the President, it would not be fair to isolate Ireland or to question Ireland’s full-fledged membership in the EU family. “We have to find a solution acceptable to all countries”, President Adamkus said, placing an emphasis on the importance of Lithuania’s partnership with Ireland.
The President further stressed that all countries had to voice their opinion on the issue and to go on with ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.
Lithuania’s President recalled that the European Union had many a time found solutions in difficult situations, thus demonstrating its viability and flexibility. “We have no doubt that we together we will find a solution in this situation, too”, said President Adamkus in the meeting of EU heads of states/governments.
EU heads of states/governments agreed to come back to this issue in their next meeting in October.
The Lisbon Treaty has already been ratified by 19 countries, including Great Britain which ratified it on the eve of the European Council.
